Shoes on the Danube Bank is a public memorial on the Pest side of the Danube in central Budapest, Hungary, dedicated to civilians - many of them Jews - who were killed along the riverbank in 1944-45. The installation was created and installed in 2005 as a stark, minimalist tribute.

The memorial was designed and placed in 2005 by sculptor Gyula Pauer and film director Can Togay to acknowledge and commemorate wartime executions by extremist militias during the final year of World War II. It is intended as a place of reflection rather than a reconstructed historical scene.

The installation sits on the Pest riverbank of the Danube in central Budapest, within sight of the Hungarian Parliament building and accessible from the riverside promenade.

• Access and location: Placed directly on the riverbank as a public memorial, the installation is free to visit and most easily seen from the Pest side near the Parliament building.
• Design and meaning: Created in 2005, the memorial commemorates people shot into the Danube during 1944-45 and consists of cast iron shoes fixed to the embankment.

The memorial is on the Pest riverside promenade (Id. Antall József rakpart), a two-minute walk from the Kossuth Lajos tér metro station (M2), directly across from the Hungarian Parliament building. Many central tram lines run along the river embankment.

• Go at dawn or dusk for the most poignant view; early morning light isolates the figures against the river and avoids the heavy daytime crowds near Parliament.
• Read the small plaques at the ends of the row of shoes - they list victims' names and ages, and they direct attention away from abstract numbers to individuals.
