About Buda Castle#
A historic palace complex on Castle Hill in Buda, Budapest, with origins in the medieval period and extensive later Baroque and 19th-century rebuilding. It now houses national cultural institutions and is a focal point of the city’s UNESCO World Heritage protected area.
Visitors explore museum collections spanning city history, Hungarian art and national library holdings distributed across palace wings, alongside restored courtyards and ramparts. The hill provides multiple viewpoints over the Danube River and the Pest side of Budapest, with pedestrian streets, terraces and stairways linking the complex to the rest of the Castle District.
The site has been a royal residence since medieval times and was rebuilt in different architectural styles following sieges and fires, most recently undergoing major reconstruction in the 18th and 19th centuries and significant restoration after damage in World War II. Over time the complex transitioned from a royal palace to a collection of public museums and cultural institutions.
Perched on the western (Buda) bank of the Danube in central Budapest, the castle complex overlooks the river opposite the Parliament area and is connected to the city by roads, funicular and pedestrian routes.
- Institutions housed: The complex contains major cultural institutions: the Budapest History Museum, the Hungarian National Gallery and the National Széchényi Library.
- World Heritage and views: The hilltop site forms part of the Buda Castle and Castle District World Heritage site with panoramic views over the Danube and central Budapest.

How to Get to Buda Castle#
Buda Castle sits on Budapest’s Castle Hill. From the Pest side you can take Metro line M2 to Batthyány tér and either walk up the hill (about 15 minutes) or change to tram/bus services that climb the hill. Alternatively, take the Budapest Castle Hill Funicular from Clark Ádám tér (the Buda end of the Chain Bridge) up to the castle area - the funicular’s upper station is a short walk from the main courtyards and museums.
Tips for Visiting Buda Castle#
- Go up to the Castle Hill early in the morning for clear views and far fewer coach groups; morning light is best for photographing the façade and the city panorama.
- Approach the complex on foot from the Chain Bridge or the Castle District rather than waiting for the funicular-walking the hill gives access to quieter courtyards and viewpoints that many visitors miss.
- If you plan to visit the museums inside the palace (Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest History Museum), buy tickets or arrive right at opening to avoid long museum queues that build later in the day.
