Northern & Northwest (Diego-Suarez, Nosy Be, Ankarana)

November is the start of the wetter half of the year for the north: regular, sometimes intense showers and a marked rise in humidity, with sea conditions that can turn choppy. Nosy Be and the mainland near Diego-Suarez experience more interrupted dive and ferry schedules; inland trails become slick and river crossings higher. If visiting, expect fewer crowds and lower prices but be ready for short-notice itinerary changes.

East Coast & Rainforests (Toamasina/Tamatave, Andasibe, Ranomafana)

November becomes noticeably wetter with heavier, more persistent rains and a return to high humidity; the risk of localised flooding in low-lying towns rises. Many small rivers swell rapidly, making some forest trails hazardous, and travel times on dirt access roads lengthen; indoor activities and cultural visits become more practical. For those prepared for wet conditions, November is rewarding for seeing swollen waterfalls and abundant amphibian life.

Central Highlands (Antananarivo, Antsirabe, Fianarantsoa, RN7)

November sees regular showers return to the plateau with warm days and humid evenings; Antananarivo is greener but travel times start to creep up due to softer side roads. Cultural markets and urban life continue as usual, but for serious trekking be prepared for occasional trail closures and muddier conditions in reserves like Ranomafana. Mosquito numbers increase as humidity rises, so bring repellents and consider antimalarial advice for extended rural stays.

West Coast & Tsingy (Morondava, Tsingy de Bemaraha, Mahajanga)

November marks the beginning of more regular rains and higher humidity, with short, sometimes heavy showers that can make some feeder tracks soft and slippery. Boat travel along mangrove-lined channels becomes more subject to weather; inland reserves may start to restrict some routes when rivers swell. Travellers should carry waterproofs and allow extra time for transfers to remote lodges.

South & Southwest (Toliara/Tuléar, Ifaty, Isalo, spiny forest)

November signals the approach of the short wet season with increasing humidity and the first sporadic showers; the spiny forest begins to green slightly after the dry months. Beach and reef activities are still good but keep an eye on forecasts, as stronger storms can roll in from November onward. Travel remains generally straightforward, but carry a light waterproof and expect rising mosquito activity.

Offshore Isles & Sainte-Marie (Île Sainte-Marie, small outer islands)

By November showers become more frequent and the island shifts toward its wet season; warm, humid air returns and small-boat schedules can be interrupted by late-afternoon squalls. Beach days are still possible between rain spells, but heavy downpours can make some dirt lanes soft and tricky for scooters. Mosquito levels rise-carry repellent and consider sleeping under a treated net in basic lodges.
