Northern & Northwest (Diego-Suarez, Nosy Be, Ankarana)

Peak cyclone season can make February feel unpredictable: long, torrential rains and very rough seas are possible around Antsiranana (Diego-Suarez) and the northwest islands. Flooded tracks and temporary bridge washouts are common after heavy systems, so flights and ferries can be delayed; when skies clear there are powerful waterfalls and suddenly green karst formations at Ankarana. For travellers this month means flexibility - plan buffer days, carry waterproof gear and expect fewer tourists.

East Coast & Rainforests (Toamasina/Tamatave, Andasibe, Ranomafana)

By February the coast still sees intense rainfall and the area remains inside the island’s most consistent wet belt; river crossings and mountain streams are at their fullest. Lowland rainforest species are active, and this is a dramatic time for birdwatching if you don’t mind muddy paths; boat travel on the Pangalanes Canal may be disrupted. Expect damp clothes, frequent insect encounters, and occasional domestic flight cancellations during heavy systems.

Central Highlands (Antananarivo, Antsirabe, Fianarantsoa, RN7)

Heavy but intermittent rains persist into February, and rural tracks between Fianarantsoa and the coast often become puddled and soft. City life in Antananarivo is busy despite the wet spells, yet cloud cover can limit the sweeping highland vistas that travellers expect. If you’re on a tight schedule, pad travel times and be ready for delays on the RN7; breathable rainwear and sturdy boots are essential.

West Coast & Tsingy (Morondava, Tsingy de Bemaraha, Mahajanga)

February keeps the western strip warm and often muggy with episodic heavy rains that can disrupt access to remote Tsingy tracks and dirt roads. Coastal waters can be choppy, affecting small boat services to offshore reefs; locals reduce movement during strong storms. If you must visit remote reserves, arrange flexible schedules and sturdy transport - ferries and river crossings are the common pinch points in this month.

South & Southwest (Toliara/Tuléar, Ifaty, Isalo, spiny forest)

The region remains wet through February with sporadic downpours that can fill dry riverbeds suddenly; Ifaty and the coastal coral reefs are subject to choppy sea conditions and reduced visibility for diving. Inland, Isalo shows swollen waterfalls and ephemeral pools popular with photographers, though access to remote viewpoints may be limited. Expect hot, sticky days and plan travel with an eye on ferry and road advisories.

Offshore Isles & Sainte-Marie (Île Sainte-Marie, small outer islands)

Storm-prone conditions in February mean that Île Sainte‑Marie sometimes sees heavy rain and rough seas; whale season has not yet begun and beaches can be windswept. Small charter boats and local pirogues run less reliably; travelers should allow extra time for island transfers or consider staying put when a storm is forecast. Bring waterproof bags and be flexible about snorkel or dive plans.
