Lumphini Park is a large public park in central Bangkok covering roughly 57 hectares and offering open lawns, walking paths and a central artificial lake. It provides a significant green space amid the city’s commercial and residential districts.

The park features tree-lined promenades, jogging tracks, exercise areas, and boat rentals on the central lake; it is frequented by locals for recreation, tai chi and group exercise. Wildlife includes monitor lizards and a variety of bird species often seen near water.

Created in the 1920s and opened in the 1920s as one of Bangkok’s earliest public parks, it was designed to provide green public space in the rapidly modernising city. Over the decades it has been a continual urban recreational facility with periodic improvements to paths and amenities.

Lumphini Park sits in Bangkok’s Pathum Wan district, bordered by key commercial areas such as Silom and Sukhumvit, and is within easy access of the city’s central business district and mass transit stations.

• Best times to visit: Early morning and late afternoon are the coolest and best-lit times for walking and watching monitor lizards by the lakes and paths.

Lumphini Park is within easy walking distance of Ratchadamri BTS station (10-15 minutes) and Lumpini MRT station (about 5 minutes). Numerous buses run along Rama IV Road; taxis and tuk-tuks drop visitors at the main entrances.
