How to Get to Livingstonia, Malawi

Livingstonia is a remote hill-top community above the northern end of Lake Malawi best reached by road from Mzuzu. Expect long, sometimes bumpy drives and limited public-transport schedules; plan transfers in advance.

By Air

Mzuzu Airport (ZZU): Mzuzu is the closest commercial airport to northern Lake Malawi and Livingstonia; from Mzuzu city centre you must continue by road. Flights to Mzuzu are limited and schedules vary, so check airlines and charter options in advance.

Kamuzu International Airport, Lilongwe (LLW): For more frequent international connections fly into Lilongwe. From Lilongwe you travel overland (long-distance bus or private transfer) to Mzuzu and then onward by road to Livingstonia - total travel time will be many hours and often requires overnight stops.

By Train & Bus

Train: Malawi has no intercity passenger rail service that serves Livingstonia; rail is not a practical option for this route.

Bus / Minibus: The usual approach from Mzuzu or other regional hubs is by minibuses (buses or private 4x4s) to Mzuzu and onward up the escarpment to Livingstonia. Roads on the final climb are steep and can be rough; journeys from Mzuzu typically take 1.5-3 hours depending on vehicle and road condition. Schedules are informal - arrange transport locally or through guesthouses.
