From Mzuzu you must continue by road to Chitipa; the drive takes several hours (typically 4-7 hours depending on stops and road conditions) and is served by minibuses and private hire.
Lilongwe International Airport (LLW): Lilongwe is a larger gateway with more frequent domestic connections; from Lilongwe the overland trip to Chitipa is long (often 8+ hours) and normally done by bus or private vehicle. There are no regular direct commercial flights into Chitipa itself.

Bus / Minibus: Buses and minibuses (often called dala-dala or express coaches) are the standard way to reach Chitipa from Mzuzu, Zomba or Lilongwe. Services vary in comfort and frequency; expect long driving times on hilly, sometimes rough roads and fares that reflect journey length (typically modest but variable).

- Intercity buses / minibuses (dala-dala) (MWK (varies by route; typically low to moderate)) - Dala-dalas and coach services link Chitipa with Mzuzu and other regional centres. They are the most common and usually cheapest option, but journeys can be long and vehicles basic-carry water and snacks for longer trips.
- Private car / hire (Varies (trip-dependent)) - Hiring a private vehicle is faster and more comfortable for reaching remote northern districts; it also offers flexibility to stop en route. Roads can be challenging after heavy rain so experienced drivers are recommended.
- Shared taxis (Moderate (per-seat rates)) - Shared taxis operate on popular routes and can be quicker than buses if you depart when the vehicle has enough passengers. Expect to share space and pay per seat; negotiate and confirm the route before leaving.
- Motorbike taxi (Low (local rates)) - Motorbike taxis are common for short distances and local errands where roads are narrower. They are convenient but less safe for long distances-wear a helmet where possible and agree price up front.
