How to Get to Mzimba#

Mzimba District is best accessed via Mzuzu Airport (ZZU) for regional flights or by road from Lilongwe. Minibuses and coaches provide the main public transport links for the area.

By Air

Lilongwe Kamuzu International Airport (LLW) & Mzuzu Airport (ZZU): Mzimba District is in the Northern Region and is most conveniently served via Mzuzu Airport (ZZU) for regional access or Lilongwe (LLW) for more flight options. Mzuzu is the closest airport for many parts of Mzimba; road transfers from Mzuzu to towns in Mzimba typically take under 2 hours depending on your destination.

Regional connections: There are limited scheduled domestic flights into ZZU; otherwise travelers use road transport from Lilongwe or Mzuzu. Road travel times vary with condition of roads and traffic.

By Train & Bus

Train: Malawi’s passenger train services are not a practical option for most Mzimba travel.

Bus / minibus (dala-dala): Regular minibuses and coach services link Mzimba with Mzuzu and Lilongwe. Minibuses are frequent and inexpensive, while coaches offer more comfort for longer legs.

How to Get Around Mzimba#

Mzimba is best approached by flying into Mzuzu or by road from Lilongwe, then using buses, minibuses or private hires for local travel. Dala-dalas are cheap and frequent but plan extra time for connections.

  • Regional flight (to Mzuzu ZZU) (MWK/varies (check local services)) - Mzuzu Airport (ZZU) is the nearest regional airport for northern Malawi destinations; flights reduce road time but are limited in frequency. Check schedules and book in advance when possible.
  • Intercity bus / coach (MWK 1,000-8,000) - Coaches and long-distance buses run between Mzuzu, Lilongwe and towns in Mzimba; they are reliable for scheduled travel and offer more comfort than minibuses for longer journeys.
  • Minibus (dala-dala) (MWK 200-2,000) - Dala-dalas are the backbone of local transport-cheap and frequent but often crowded and less comfortable. They are ideal for short-to-medium regional hops and for connecting to local markets.
  • Taxi / private hire (MWK 3,000-20,000 (depending on distance)) - Private cars and taxis provide flexibility for rural visits or trips to locations not served by public transport; negotiate a rate or hire a driver for the day for remote exploration.
  • Motorbike taxi (kabaza) (MWK 100-500) - Motorbike taxis are common for short local journeys and are cheap and quick for single riders. Use caution on busy roads and unpaved stretches.
  • Walking - In Mzimba’s towns many services are within walking distance; for rural areas walking is often necessary for short local errands. Carry water and sun protection for longer walks.
