How to Get to Karonga#
Karonga in northern Malawi can be reached by a short regional flight into Karonga Airport (KGJ) where services exist, or by road from Mzuzu or Lilongwe using minibuses and coaches. Road travel is the most common option for budget travelers.
Lilongwe Kamuzu International Airport (LLW): Lilongwe is Malawi’s main international gateway; from there you can reach the Northern Region by road or domestic flights to regional airports. LLW to Mzuzu or Karonga by road is a long drive (6-10 hours) or you can connect via domestic services where available.
Karonga Airport (KGJ): Karonga has a regional airport (KGJ) with limited scheduled flights; flights reduce long road journeys and can connect via Lilongwe or Mzuzu depending on service availability. Flight schedules and fares vary-book in advance where possible.
Train: Malawi’s passenger rail network is very limited and unreliable for most intercity travel; trains are not a practical way to reach Karonga.
Bus / minibus (dala-dala) & coach: Regular intercity minibuses and coaches run to Karonga from Mzuzu and Lilongwe. A minibus from Mzuzu to Karonga takes roughly 2-3 hours; fares are modest (typically a few thousand MWK - check local prices). Long-distance coaches from Lilongwe can take 8-10 hours depending on stops.

- Minibus (dala-dala) (MWK 300-2,000) - Minibuses (locally known as dala-dala) are the common, low-cost way to travel between towns; they can be crowded and less comfortable but are frequent. Confirm the destination before boarding and keep small change ready.
- Taxi / private hire (MWK 2,000-15,000 (depending on distance)) - Taxis and private hires are available for local transfers and shorter regional trips; negotiate the fare in advance or use a meter where available. A private hire can be a good choice for groups or if you need door-to-door service.
