Tripolitania / Western Coast (Tripoli to Sabratha)

Autumn cools further in October; the first substantial rains of the season can arrive by month’s end, especially near Tripoli and the far west. Days are comfortable for walking the old city and visiting markets, while ancient sites become quieter after the summer crowds; keep shoes you don’t mind getting a bit muddy. Ferry and road travel is usually dependable but check for localized washouts if heavy rain falls.

Jabal Nafusa (Nafusa Mountains and Hinterland)

October often feels brisk in the mountains, with clear skies and vivid daylight for scenic drives and mountain village visits. Rain becomes more likely later in the month compared with the dry summer months, so keep a light waterproof on hand for sudden downpours that can slick rocky trails. This is one of the best months for visiting - fewer flies, comfortable daytime temperatures, and lively local markets.

Cyrenaica / Eastern Coast & Jabal al Akhdar (Benghazi to Derna)

October returns cooler, fresher air to the coast and highlands and occasional early autumn storms appear by the month’s end. Mountain tracks are particularly pleasant before the winter rains begin, and bird migration along coastal wetlands can be rewarding for wildlife watchers. Pack a rain jacket for sudden showers and layers for chilly evenings in Al-Bayda and Shahhat.

Fezzan & Central Sahara (Sabha, Ghat, Murzuq)

October is widely regarded as one of the best months to explore Fezzan: days are warm and stable, nights cool and comfortable, and dust activity drops compared with summer. Overland trips to sites like Ghat’s rock art and the Murzuq erg are safer and more pleasant, with reliable driving conditions on established tracks. Pack layers for cool evenings and prepare for full desert isolation away from main towns.

Kufra & Southeastern Oases (Kufra, Jalu, Tazerbo)

October brings reliably warm days and cool nights - a prime time for deep-desert journeys from Kufra when heat is diminished but rainfall remains negligible. The oases are active with local life and long-distance routes are more comfortable for overland travel. Carry layered clothing for chilly dawns and maintain a cautious approach to remote navigation and vehicle readiness.
