Tripolitania / Western Coast (Tripoli to Sabratha)
June marks the real start of the dry, hot season on the western coast but the sea keeps conditions bearable: daytime highs typically sit in the high twenties to low thirties. Swimming and boat trips along the coast are most pleasant now, with clear water and little rain, though the sun is strong and shade is scarce along exposed ruins. Expect small tourist crowds to rise; bring a wide-brim hat and plenty of water for archaeological visits.
Jabal Nafusa (Nafusa Mountains and Hinterland)
June heats up in the lower valleys but the higher villages remain pleasant, with warm days suitable for longer hikes and exploration of rock art sites. Water points are lower than in spring so carry extra water for longer treks; afternoon breezes can cool exposed ridgelines. Roads into smaller villages may be bumpy but generally passable; bring sun protection and light layers for evenings.
Cyrenaica / Eastern Coast & Jabal al Akhdar (Benghazi to Derna)
June sees the transition to sustained summer heat along the eastern strip, but the Jabal al Akhdar’s elevation keeps temperatures relatively moderate and pleasant for daytime excursions. Coastal Benghazi can become quite hot by mid-month, though afternoon sea breezes help, and diving or boat trips are enjoyable before the peak summer. Book accommodations earlier in the season if you want rooms near the coast or in Al-Bayda’s cooler reaches.
Fezzan & Central Sahara (Sabha, Ghat, Murzuq)
June moves the central Sahara into hot-season territory - daytime temperatures are high and excursions should be either very early or in late afternoon, with afternoons best spent resting in shaded courtyards in towns like Sabha. Sandstorms and dust haze become more likely on gusty days; they reduce visibility and can interrupt remote travel. Carry sunblock, breathable clothing and ensure vehicles have good cooling systems.
Kufra & Southeastern Oases (Kufra, Jalu, Tazerbo)
June pushes temperatures higher; daytime heat becomes a major factor so schedule long drives before sunrise and keep afternoons for rest in shaded oasis compounds. Sand-laden winds pick up occasionally, and dust can affect mechanics and breathing, so carry spare filters and protective clothing. Service availability is limited in summer - confirm supply runs and accommodations well in advance.
