Lenyadri

Lenyadri is a hillside complex of rock-cut caves near Junnar in Maharashtra, India, notable for a cave temple dedicated to Ganesha that forms part of the Ashtavinayak pilgrimage. The site combines Buddhist-period cave architecture with later Hindu religious use.

The principal attraction is the cave shrine where a Ganesha image is installed in a chamber carved into basalt; the complex also includes adjoining monastic and passage caves that show characteristic rock-cut features. Visitors typically approach the temple via a short climb up the hillside and walk between caves.

The caves were carved in ancient times as Buddhist chaityas and viharas and were later adapted for Hindu worship; the Ganesha shrine became a marked site on regional pilgrimage routes. Archaeological and epigraphic evidence attribute the original carving phases to the early centuries of the first millennium.
