Harishchandragad is a hill fort and rocky outcrop in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra, India, known as a long-standing trekking destination and regional pilgrimage site. The site combines natural cliffs with rock-cut structures and temple remains.

The high plateau features steep escarpments and a number of distinct viewpoints and cave-temple complexes; Konkan Kada is a prominent sheer cliff favored for panoramic sunrises and looks over the surrounding hills. Trails to the plateau vary in length but commonly involve several hours of steep ascent from nearby villages and include exposed sections and rock steps.

The fort complex contains temples, caves and ruined fortifications that reflect medieval and later use as a defensive hill station and pilgrimage site. Over centuries the site has been reused and modified by local ruling powers and communities; many visible structures are vernacular repairs and temple additions rather than a single construction phase.

Harishchandragad sits in the Ahmednagar/Pune region of the Western Ghats, Maharashtra, approximately 100-150 kilometers from Pune by road depending on route. The surrounding landscape is rugged, with a mix of scrubby hills and lateritic plateau typical of the northern Western Ghats.

• Best time to visit: Best visited in the dry season (October to February) when trails are firmer and monsoon-related rockfall is minimal.
• Trekking notes: Several sections require basic scrambling and night camping is common on the plateau for sunrise views from Konkan Kada.

What to See#

• Caves and temples: A rocky summit plateau, several temples and cave complexes including the Kedareshwar cave temple with a perennial stream and Shiva linga. Popular trekking routes approach from the villages of Khireshwar and Pachnai and cross the plateau and escarpments.
• Cliffs and peaks: Konkan Kada - a sheer cliff face and viewpoint often used for sunrise views over the surrounding Western Ghats. Taramati and Nadsur are the main peaks linked to the fort complex.

Nearest large town is Nashik or Pune depending on approach; the closest railway access is Kalyan or Igatpuri for many trekkers, then a bus or taxi to the village of Khireshwar or Pachnai. From Pachnai the trail to Harishchandragad takes several hours on foot; local guides and horse transport can be arranged in village bazaars.

• Start early in the dry season to avoid heat and afternoon monsoon showers (Monsoon: June-September can get wet on the Western Ghats slopes).
• Carry a headlamp if planning to enter Kedareshwar cave for the linga-the cave can be dim and narrow.
• Do the climb via Pachnai steps and avoid attempting Konkan Kada in wet weather; the cliff edge is notoriously exposed.
