The Karla Caves are a complex of ancient Buddhist rock-cut caves near Lonavala in Maharashtra, comprising a large chaitya (prayer hall) and multiple monastic cells. The main chaitya is one of the largest and best-preserved rock-cut assembly halls in western India and retains traces of original wooden detailing.

The complex developed over several centuries, with the principal chaitya and surrounding viharas carved and decorated during the early historic period by Buddhist communities and patrons active on regional trade routes. The site includes carved reliefs, inscriptions and architectural detailing that document religious and patronage practices of the period.

Karla lies in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra and is accessible from nearby towns and road links; the caves are a major example of Indian rock-cut religious architecture and are often visited as part of regional cultural tourism.

• Viharas and cells: A collection of smaller viharas and cells cut into the rock face surrounding the chaitya, used historically as monastic living quarters and for devotional sculpture.

The Karla Caves (Karla Caves complex) are near Lonavala in Maharashtra. By train take the Mumbai-Pune line to Lonavala railway station; from Lonavala hire a taxi, auto-rickshaw or local bus to the Karla/Bedsa caves area (a short drive). By car, drive from Mumbai or Pune on the Mumbai-Pune Highway (NH48) to the Lonavala exit and follow local roads to the caves; the road journey from Mumbai typically takes around 2-3 hours depending on traffic.

From the parking or drop-off point there is a short uphill walk and steps to reach the cave complex and the main chaitya.

• Aim to arrive at Karla Caves early in the day before tour buses and heat build up-weekdays are noticeably quieter than weekends for the Lonavala area.
• Approach the main chaitya from the Karla village/parking area and allow time to walk the surrounding rock-cut complex; many visitors miss the panoramic valley views from the hilltop above the caves, so continue a short way up the ridge for better photographs and fewer people.
