Lake Matano
Lake Extremely deep tectonic lake on Sulawesi, ancient biodiversity
On Sulawesi, Lake Matano ranks among Indonesia’s deepest lakes, prized for clear water, endemic freshwater species and traditional fishing villages-diving, boat trips and village visits are common activities.
Lake Matano is a tectonic lake on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia and is the deepest lake in the country. It is one of the group of Malili lakes on southeastern Sulawesi, notable for high levels of endemic species.
Clear deep waters and steep shorelines characterise the lake; it supports fisheries and research interest because of its unique fauna. Many fish and invertebrate species found there occur nowhere else.
Lake Matano occupies a rift-associated basin formed by tectonic processes and has existed long enough for significant biological endemism to develop. The lake has been used by local communities for fishing and transport for many generations.
The lake lies in South Sulawesi province on the southeastern peninsula of Sulawesi as part of the Malili lakes system, set into hilly terrain surrounding the basin.
- Depth and biodiversity: The deepest lake in Indonesia and part of the Malili lake system, noted for very high levels of endemic freshwater biodiversity.
