Lake Esrum (Esrum Sø) is a large freshwater lake in North Zealand, Denmark, located in the Capital Region of Denmark and notable as one of the largest lakes on the island of Zealand. It lies within a mixed landscape of forest and low hills and has an area on the order of tens of square kilometres.
The lake is used for boating, angling and walking; shoreline trails and forest tracks in nearby Gribskov provide viewpoints and picnic spots. Historic sites including the Esrum Monastery (ruins and visitor facilities) sit close to the western shore and attract cultural visitors as well as nature users.
The lake and its surroundings have long been a managed landscape with forestry and rural estates; the monastery on the shore dates back to the medieval period and the area has been used for hunting and recreation over many centuries.
