Lafonia
Area Peninsula region forming southern East Falkland, rural farmland
Lafonia is the low-lying southern peninsula of East Falkland in the Falkland Islands, named after British merchant Samuel Fisher Lafone. It forms a distinct geographic subregion of East Falkland and contains several of the island group’s rural settlements.
The landscape is dominated by open grasslands and large sheep farms that cover broad tracts of the peninsula. Key local settlements include Goose Green, which is one of the main inhabited centres in the area and provides the principal services for the surrounding farms. Beaches, coastal wetlands and scattered peatlands are typical; wildlife viewing is possible but infrastructure for tourism is limited.
The name commemorates Samuel Fisher Lafone, who was active in the region in the mid-19th century. The area has been used primarily for pastoral agriculture since European colonization, with farms and estancias established across the peninsula.
Lafonia occupies the southern portion of East Falkland and is connected to the northern part of the island by a relatively narrow isthmus. The peninsula contains the main rural settlements for southern East Falkland and faces the surrounding Atlantic coast.
- Settlements: The settlement of Goose Green and several other small farm settlements are located within the peninsula and serve as the main inhabited points.
- Land use: Extensive sheep farming and low population density define the modern land use, with large estancias (ranches) covering much of the area.
