Mount Usborne
Mountain Highest point of the Falkland Islands on East Falkland
Mount Usborne is the highest point in the Falkland Islands, rising to about 705 metres above sea level. It is located on East Falkland and is the archipelago’s principal summit.
The peak attracts walkers and birdwatchers for its open, windswept summit and 360-degree views over East Falkland’s moorland and coastal inlets. The ridge and surrounding terrain are typical sub-Antarctic upland-peat, grassland and patchy rock-rather than forested.
Mount Usborne is a natural highland feature rather than a manmade site and has long been used as a landmark for navigation and local travel across East Falkland.
The mountain lies on East Falkland island, some tens of kilometres west of the capital Stanley, amid the island’s rolling uplands and scattered farms.
- Elevation: 705 metres above sea level and the highest point in the Falkland Islands
Tips for Visiting Mount Usborne #
- Visit during the southern summer (November-March) for the longest daylight and milder conditions - Falkland weather is changeable and winter visits are harsh and short on daylight.
- Confirm land access before setting off: Mount Usborne sits amid working sheep farms on East Falkland, so many routes cross private land and you should ask landowners or use established public tracks where available.
- Aim for calm mornings to reduce wind exposure and improve visibility; many visitors underestimate how quickly fog and wind can cut views and make navigation harder.
- Use a high-clearance vehicle for the rural unpaved roads common around the mountain and plan for very limited services and mobile coverage once you leave the main settlements.
Best Time to Visit Mount Usborne #
The best time to go is in the austral summer (December-February) when conditions are mildest and daylight is longest.
