Main image

East Falkland is the largest island in the Falkland Islands archipelago in the South Atlantic and contains the territory’s capital, Stanley. The island combines coastal settlements with extensive rural grazing land and upland moor.

Key destinations on the island include the capital town of Stanley, lowland farms and the island’s interior with upland ridges culminating at Mount Usborne (about 705 metres). The island also contains several small settlements and historically significant sites such as Goose Green.

East Falkland was the main focus of military activity during the 1982 Falklands War between Argentina and the United Kingdom; operations on and around the island led to its return to British administration in mid-1982.

Geographically the island lies in the South Atlantic and forms the eastern half of the inhabited Falklands group; Stanley sits on the island’s east coast and is the primary point of arrival for visitors.

  • Stanley access: Stanley is the islands' main population centre and the usual entry point for visitors arriving by air or sea.
  • Highest point: Mount Usborne is the island's highest summit at about 705 metres and is the most prominent upland feature.
