Best Time to Visit Kisii, Kenya #

Kisii's highland climate is mild year-round, but the best time to visit is during the dry months when roads are firm and views are clear. Avoid the long rains (March-May) if you dislike frequent heavy downpours, though the countryside is exceptionally green then.

Long Rains
March - May · 12-24°C (54-75°F)
Heavy, frequent downpours make dirt roads muddy and hiking slippery; lush green scenery and waterfalls are dramatic, but travel can be slower and many outdoor activities get disrupted.
Short Rains
October - December · 13-23°C (55-73°F)
Short, unpredictable showers break up sunny days - great for floral displays and fewer tourists, but expect occasional road washouts and canceled walks.
Dry Season
June - February · 14-27°C (57-81°F)
Clear skies, cooler nights, and firm roads make this the easiest time for hiking, market visits, and exploring surrounding tea and coffee farms.

How to Get to Kisii, Kenya

Kisii is best reached by road from nearby regional airports or major Kenyan cities; the nearest major airport is Kisumu International Airport (KIS), while international arrivals usually connect via Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta (NBO). There is no regular passenger rail to Kisii, so intercity coaches, matatus and private transfers are the usual onward options.

By Air

Kisumu International Airport (KIS): The nearest major airport to Kisii is Kisumu International. From the airport you can take a taxi into Kisumu city centre (about 10-20 minutes, KES 800-1,200) and then catch a matatu or coach to Kisii (roughly 2-3 hours, typical fare KES 300-600). If you prefer a direct transfer, private taxis or shuttle hires from Kisumu Airport to Kisii take about 2-2.5 hours and cost around KES 4,000-7,000 depending on vehicle and negotiation.

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO): Nairobi’s main international airport is the usual arrival point for most international flights. You can connect onward with a domestic flight to Kisumu (flight time ~1 hour; fares vary widely, often KES 6,000-15,000 one-way depending on carrier and how far in advance you book) and then continue to Kisii as above. Alternatively, long‑distance coaches and matatus depart Nairobi for Kisii (see Bus section) - expect a road journey of roughly 5-7 hours from Nairobi city, plus transfer time from the airport to Nairobi departure points (taxi/shuttle NBO→city ~45-60 minutes, KES 1,000-2,000).

By Train & Bus

Train: Kisii is not served by Kenya Railways’ SGR or by regular intercity passenger rail services. There is no reliable passenger train connection into Kisii town, so travellers should plan to use road links (air+road or direct road coaches) for connections.

Bus / Matatu: Kisii Bus Park is the town’s main bus terminus and the hub for intercounty services. Regular matatus and coach services connect Kisii with Kisumu (about 2-3 hours, KES ~300-600) and Nairobi (about 5-7 hours, KES ~700-1,200); frequencies vary by time of day and operator, so check schedules at the bus park or book with operators in advance for peak travel times.

How to Get Around Kisii, Kenya

Kisii is primarily a road‑based destination: intercity coaches and matatus link it to Kisumu and Nairobi, and local travel is best done by matatu, boda‑boda or short taxi rides. For speed and comfort, fly into Kisumu and transfer by road; for the cheapest option, use matatus and boda‑bodas for short trips.
