How to Get to Kisumu
Kisumu is served directly by Kisumu International Airport (KIS) and by regular coach connections to other Kenyan towns; domestic flights from Nairobi are the fastest way to arrive. The city has an old railway station, but passenger train services are limited, so most visitors use flights, coaches or matatus.
Kisumu International Airport (KIS): Kisumu International Airport is the city’s main airport with scheduled domestic flights (notably Nairobi-Kisumu). From the terminal to Kisumu city centre it’s a short drive: airport taxis and hotel shuttles take about 10-20 minutes and typically cost around KES 600-1,200; boda-boda rides are cheaper (roughly KES 200-400) but less comfortable with luggage.
Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO): Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta is the main international gateway for travellers heading to Kisumu. Direct domestic flights (operators such as Jambojet and Kenya Airways) take about 40-50 minutes; advance fares commonly range from roughly KES 4,000-10,000 one-way. If you prefer surface travel, scheduled coach services and matatus run between Nairobi and Kisumu (see bus details below) and take substantially longer.
Train: Kisumu has a historic railway station on the metre-gauge network (Kisumu Railway Station), but regular passenger train services are limited and often intermittent. Check Kenya Railways for current timetables before planning; for most visitors the rail option is not a reliable arrival method.
Bus: Coach operators such as Easy Coach and Modern Coast run scheduled services to and from Kisumu, using the central Kisumu bus terminals. Journey times to Nairobi are typically about 6-8 hours depending on route and traffic; fares for scheduled coaches are roughly KES 800-2,000 one-way. Within the region, shared minibuses (matatus) run frequent intercity and local routes from the main bus parks with much lower fares for short hops.
How to Get Around Kisumu
Kisumu is best navigated using a mix of matatus for cheap, frequent trips and boda-bodas or ride-hailing for faster point-to-point travel. For visitors, central Kisumu and the lakeside are walkable; use ferries when heading to nearby islands and hire a car if you plan extended excursions outside the city.
- Matatu (shared minibus) (KES 30-150) - Matatus are the backbone of urban and regional travel around Kisumu - frequent, cheap and dropping you close to most neighbourhoods and bus parks. Short in-city fares commonly run KES 30-150 depending on distance; intercity matatus to nearby towns cost more. Expect crowded vehicles at peak times, carry small change, and ask locals or your accommodation for the correct route/stage name.
- Boda-boda (motorcycle taxi) (KES 50-300) - Boda-bodas are the quickest way to thread through traffic and reach corners of the city not well served by matatus, especially for short trips and waterfront access. Short rides in the central area typically cost KES 50-300; always ask the price before boarding and insist on a helmet where available. For longer or luggage-bearing trips a taxi or private car is generally more comfortable and safer.
- Taxis & Ride-hailing (Bolt / local taxis) (KES 200-1,200) - Metered taxis and app-based services such as Bolt operate in Kisumu and offer more comfortable, door-to-door travel than matatus. Short in-city rides usually cost from around KES 200, with longer journeys and airport transfers commonly in the KES 500-1,200 range. Use ride-hailing apps where available for clearer fares and driver details; cash payments remain common for local taxis.
- Car hire / Self-drive (KES 4,000-7,000/day) - Car hire is available from national and local agencies and is useful if you plan to explore lakeshore areas or venture into rural Kakamega and Kisii counties. Daily rates for a small car typically start around KES 4,000-7,000 depending on the company and insurance; roads within the city are generally navigable but some peri-urban routes can be rough. Ensure you have comprehensive insurance and local driving guidance if you plan independent trips outside the city.
- Ferries & Boats (Lake Victoria) (KES 200-600) - Kisumu's port on Lake Victoria provides ferry and motorboat services to islands such as Rusinga and Mfangano as well as to nearby lakeshore communities. Ticket prices for scheduled ferries and launches are typically in the range of KES 200-600 depending on destination and vessel; journey times vary from about 1 hour to several hours. Schedules can change with weather and demand, so check the Kisumu port notices or local operators before travelling.
- Walking - The central business district, the lakeside promenade and markets are compact and easily explored on foot; walking is often the fastest way to move short distances in the CBD. Pavements can be uneven and there are areas with limited shade, so plan for sun and occasional traffic when crossing roads. Walking also gives the best access to lakeside attractions, museums and local eateries.
