Best Time to Visit Kafue#
Kafue is best visited during the cool dry season for wildlife viewing and comfortable days. The rainy season floods plains, making boat and game drives harder but the landscape is lush.
November - April
15-30°C (59-86°F)
Landscape turns emerald and birdlife explodes, but heavy rains can make roads impassable and some reserves waterlogged-expect fewer game drive opportunities mid‑rainy season.
May - August
10-25°C (50-77°F)
Clear skies and pleasantly cool mornings make for excellent game viewing and walking safaris; rivers recede, concentrating animals and boosting sightings.
September - October
20-36°C (68-97°F)
Very hot, drying plains focus wildlife around shrinking waterholes - great for photography but prepare for dust, heat and longer daytime rests.

Kafue is closest to Lusaka’s Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (LUN); many visitors arrive via Lusaka and continue by road. Public minibuses and private transfers are the normal ways to reach Kafue from the capital.
Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, Lusaka (LUN): The main international gateway for travellers to Kafue, located about 45-70 km from Kafue town depending on route. Road transfer time is roughly 1-1.5 hours; airport taxis and private transfers cost substantially more than buses (expect airport taxi quotes - confirm price in ZMW before travel).
Kafue Airport (small airstrip): Kafue has a local airstrip used for charter flights and private aircraft rather than scheduled commercial services. Charters land close to town but must be arranged in advance.
Train: Zambia’s passenger rail services do not provide frequent, reliable links to Kafue for most travellers; passenger rail is limited and often irregular - do not rely on scheduled long-distance trains.
Bus / Minibus: Regular minibuses and intercity coaches run between Lusaka and Kafue from Lusaka’s bus stations; minibuses (kombis) are the most common option. Typical journey time is about 1-1.5 hours from Lusaka and fares are modest (local minibuses historically in the range of ZMW10-40 depending on vehicle and season).
How to Get Around Kafue#
Most visitors transit through Lusaka (LUN) and take minibuses or private transfers to Kafue. For comfort and luggage, book a private transfer or coach; kombis are cheapest but basic.
- Minibus / Shared kombi (ZMW10-40) - Shared minibuses (kombis) run frequently between Lusaka and Kafue from main Lusaka bus points. They are the cheapest option for local intercity travel; expect basic vehicles and frequent stops - keep valuables secure.
- Intercity coach / private transfer (ZMW100-400) - Coaches and private transfers offer more comfort and luggage space and are preferable if you have gear for safaris or national park visits. Private transfers reduce travel time and door-to-door hassle but cost considerably more than kombis.
- Taxi (ZMW150-600) - Metered taxis and private cars are available in Lusaka and can be hired to Kafue; negotiate a fixed return price for day trips. Taxis provide flexibility for park or lodge transfers where minibuses are inconvenient.
- Charter flights ((charter rates vary widely)) - Charters to the local Kafue airstrip are used by tourism operators and lodges for direct access to national parks. They require advance booking and are significantly more expensive than road travel but save travel time.
