How to Get to Janitzio#
Janitzio is an island in Lake Pátzcuaro best reached by flying into Morelia (MLM) or Uruapan and continuing by bus or car to Pátzcuaro town, then a short boat crossing. The island is served by frequent small boats from Pátzcuaro’s main pier.
General aviation / Morelia Airport (MLM): The nearest major airport serving the Pátzcuaro area is General Francisco J. Múgica International Airport (Morelia, MLM). From Morelia it is roughly a 1.5-2 hour drive to Pátzcuaro by road; rental cars and taxis are available at the airport.
Uruapan Airport (UPN): Uruapan is closer in some routes but has fewer commercial connections; it can be a practical alternative depending on flight schedules and onward ground transport arrangements.
Train: There is no direct long-distance passenger rail service to Janitzio/Pátzcuaro; travel is by road.
Bus: ADO and other coach companies run frequent services from Morelia and Mexico City to Pátzcuaro bus station; the Morelia-Pátzcuaro journey takes about 1-1.5 hours by coach. From Pátzcuaro town centre it is a short taxi and then a small motorboat across Lake Pátzcuaro to Janitzio - the boat crossing takes about 10-15 minutes and local boat fares are modest (typically a few dozen pesos).
How to Get Around Janitzio#
Fly into Morelia or Uruapan and continue by bus or car to Pátzcuaro, then take a short boat taxi to Janitzio. Once on the island everything is explored on foot; boats are frequent and inexpensive.
- Bus (ADO and regional) - ADO and regional bus companies run regular services to Pátzcuaro from Morelia and Mexico City. Buses to Pátzcuaro are comfortable and drop you at the town’s central bus station, from which you can walk or take a short taxi to the lakeside pier.
- Car / Rental (MXN 400-900/day) - Driving from Morelia to Pátzcuaro takes around 1-1.5 hours and gives maximum flexibility to visit lakeside viewpoints and surrounding villages. Parking in Pátzcuaro is available near the waterfront.
- Taxi (Pátzcuaro pier) (MXN 20-80) - Taxis from Pátzcuaro town centre to the Janitzio boat pier are short and inexpensive; agree a fare or use metered taxis where available. Useful if you have luggage or are visiting early or late in the day.
- Boat (water taxi) (MXN 20-60) - Frequent motorboat taxis cross from Pátzcuaro to Janitzio - crossings take about 10-15 minutes. Boat fares are modest (typically a few dozen Mexican pesos); boats run throughout the day with increased frequency during festivals.
