Tzintzuntzan is a pre-Columbian archaeological site on the eastern shore of Lake Pátzcuaro in Michoacán, Mexico, that served as the capital of the Purépecha (Tarascan) state in the late pre-Hispanic period.

Tzintzuntzan was a major political and ceremonial centre of the Purépecha state from the late Postclassic period until the Spanish conquest in the 16th century; after contact with the Spanish the political centre was altered and the colonial settlement developed nearby.

Lies on the lakeshore in central Michoacán, adjacent to the modern town of Tzintzuntzan and overlooking Lake Pátzcuaro in western Mexico.

• Historical significance: The site served as the capital of the Purépecha (Tarascan) state before the Spanish conquest and is noted for its five semicircular yácata pyramids.

What to See#

• Yácatas: A group of five large semicircular platform pyramids built on a raised terrace overlooking Lake Pátzcuaro, which are the site’s most distinctive monuments.
• Plaza and site museum: A low ceremonial plaza and residential terraces beside the yácatas, plus an on-site museum that displays recovered artifacts and interpretations of the site.

Tzintzuntzan sits on the northeastern shore of Lake Pátzcuaro in Michoacán. It is roughly 20-30 minutes by road from the town of Pátzcuaro; buses and colectivos run regularly between the towns and the archaeological site.

• Combine a visit with the Pátzcuaro lakeshore and the small town of Pátzcuaro for the fuller regional context.
• Hire a local guide at the site entrance to understand Purépecha funerary practices and the purpose of the yácatas (circular platforms).
• Bring sun protection and water; much of the archaeological area is exposed with limited shade.
