How to Get to Tzintzuntzan, Michoacán

Tzintzuntzan is a small lakeside town on Lake Pátzcuaro in Michoacán. There are no useful passenger trains; the standard approach is to fly to Morelia or arrive by long-distance bus to Morelia or Pátzcuaro, then take a short regional bus or taxi to Tzintzuntzan.

By Air

Morelia International Airport (MLM): Morelia is the most convenient airport for Tzintzuntzan (Michoacán). From Morelia airport take a taxi or shared shuttle to Pátzcuaro (about 50-70 minutes) then a short bus or taxi to Tzintzuntzan; airport-to-Pátzcuaro transfers commonly take around 1-1.5 hours and fares for shuttles or taxis vary (expect roughly MXN 300-800 for private transfers).

Uruapan (UPN): Uruapan is another regional airport but offers fewer connections; arriving there typically requires a longer road transfer to Pátzcuaro/Tzintzuntzan by bus or taxi (1.5-2.5 hours).

By Train & Bus

Train: Mexico’s long-distance passenger rail network is extremely limited; trains are not a practical option for Tzintzuntzan.

Bus: Intercity buses are the main public-transport option. From Morelia or Pátzcuaro take regional buses to Tzintzuntzan - the Pátzcuaro-Tzintzuntzan stretch is short (10-20 minutes) and inexpensive. Long-distance bus companies link Morelia with Mexico City and other major cities; from Morelia take a regional bus to Pátzcuaro and onward local transport to Tzintzuntzan.

How to Get Around Tzintzuntzan, Michoacán #

Tzintzuntzan is small and easy to explore on foot - the archaeological zone and town centre are within short walking distances. For trips farther afield you’ll find local taxis and colectivos to Pátzcuaro and combi/minibus services that link to other lakeside towns.

If you plan to visit Janitzio or other Lake Pátzcuaro islands, boat services operate from nearby piers seasonally. Practical tip: services thin out in the evening, so plan return transport earlier in the day.
