Sumatra (Northern and Western Sumatra)

September generally still sits in the dry season with warm days and limited heavy rain, making it a comfortable month to visit coastal Padang, Bukittinggi and Lake Toba. River levels are lower and rafting is calmer but still scenic. Ferry crossings to the Mentawai islands are more reliable than in the wet months, but pack a light windbreaker for cooler mornings in the highlands.

Java & Bali (Central and Eastern Java, Bali, Lombok)

September offers warm, mostly dry days with fewer tourists than July-August; this is a top window for photography at Borobudur and for diving around Nusa Penida where visibility is improving. Bali’s southern beaches are pleasant and Lombok’s trekking routes such as Rinjani approaches become dustier but more open. Ferry crossings remain reliable and hotel rates often drop a little as the high season wanes.

Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo)

September is often still part of the drier window, with warm, sunny days and easier access to remote areas. Boat timetables stabilize and longhouse visits become straightforward. This is a useful month for combining river trips with overland travel to the coast; insect activity is present but manageable with repellent and proper clothing.

Sulawesi & the Maluku Islands

September often offers warm sunny days and placid seas, good for island-hopping through the Malukus or diving in Bunaken and Lembeh. Late-month breezes can start to freshen coastal waters, improving surface comfort on boats. Inland routes in Toraja remain dry, making multi-day treks and village stays straightforward. This is a quieter month than peak season but favourable for most outdoor activities.

Nusa Tenggara & Komodo (Lombok, Sumbawa, Flores, Sumba, Komodo National Park)

September offers a continuation of warm, dry weather with the advantage of easing crowds and often excellent underwater visibility, making it a top month for diving and photography. Komodo’s landscapes are parched and dramatic, while Flores’ trekking routes remain accessible. Sea conditions are typically calm, making inter-island ferries more reliable and last-minute trips easier to organize.

Papua (Western New Guinea: Highlands and Coastal Papua, Raja Ampat area)

September often marks a tailing-off of the drier highland period; while many days remain clear, short rain episodes begin to return to the lowlands. Raja Ampat diving is still functional and can be excellent before the monsoon re-intensifies, but watch boat schedules for late-month wind changes. Travellers can enjoy a mix of dry trekking and improving coastal conditions if they remain flexible about connections.
