Sumatra (Northern and Western Sumatra)
Clearer skies and lower rainfall are common in May; Sumatra’s mountains and Lake Toba become more accessible for trekking and scenic drives. Wildlife excursions in Bukit Lawang improve as trails dry out, increasing chances to see orangutans on land rather than just glimpses in the canopy. Coastal areas warm up, and travel schedules stabilize - a good month to plan multi-day land journeys when ferry services are less prone to cancellation.
Java & Bali (Central and Eastern Java, Bali, Lombok)
May is a clean, low-humidity month ideal for visiting Borobudur and Prambanan near Yogyakarta or hiking Mount Bromo at dawn. Beach towns in Bali and the Gili islands enjoy calmer seas and better snorkeling visibility; crowds grow but hotels still have availability outside peak July-August. Cultural festivals appear across Java and Bali, and rainfall is scarce enough that multi-day land journeys run smoothly.
Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo)
A drier spell in May improves overland and river travel across the region, with warmer sunny stretches punctuated by isolated showers. Wildlife trekking around Tanjung Puting becomes less muddy, and local markets in Pontianak feel livelier as traders return to more predictable schedules. Pack for heat and humidity, but expect easier navigation of lowland trails and more reliable river crossings.
Sulawesi & the Maluku Islands
May is a good shoulder month: Sulawesi’s central highlands and the Maluku Islands often enjoy drier weather and warm days suitable for island-hopping. Bunaken’s diving conditions generally improve, and cultural travel around Toraja becomes much drier and easier to navigate. Ferry connections are more dependable and visitor numbers are moderate, making this an efficient month to combine land and sea itineraries.
Nusa Tenggara & Komodo (Lombok, Sumbawa, Flores, Sumba, Komodo National Park)
May offers warm, dry conditions ideal for island-hopping and diving; Komodo National Park runs close to full schedules and the famous dragon-watching treks are straightforward. Lombok’s beaches and Rinjani approaches are dryer and dustier but accessible; ferries between islands are more dependable. Expect growing numbers of travellers but still manageable crowds compared with Bali’s peak months.
Papua (Western New Guinea: Highlands and Coastal Papua, Raja Ampat area)
May often provides one of the clearest runs in the highlands - Wamena and the Baliem Valley enjoy drier days and cooler nights that are excellent for trekking and cultural visits. Coastal places such as Biak and parts of Raja Ampat see more reliable sea conditions than in deep wet months. This is a good time for planning overland-highland circuits, but carry warm layers for chilly nights at altitude.
