Sumatra (Northern and Western Sumatra)

By April the island begins a gradual shift toward the drier half of the year, with more frequent sunbreaks on the west coast and in the highlands near Bukittinggi. Water levels are still high so river rafting on the Asahan or trips to Harau Valley are dramatic, if messy. Crowds remain low and prices can be easier to find; pack light layers, a rain shell, and expect occasional muddy trails rather than days of continuous downpour.

Java & Bali (Central and Eastern Java, Bali, Lombok)

April brings a pronounced improvement in weather for most of Java and Bali as the dry season establishes itself; mornings are clear and volcanic sunrise treks become reliably accessible. Ubud’s rice terraces and Javanese temples look their best with fewer storms, and Bali’s beach towns kick into the shoulder season. Pack sun protection and a light jacket for cool mountain mornings; ferry services resume more regular schedules and domestic flights are less weather-affected.

Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo)

April sees a gradual reduction in daily downpours in many parts of Kalimantan, though humidity remains high and isolated storms still occur. Rivers start to clear a little and access to interior rainforests improves, making April a decent shoulder month for multi-day river expeditions. Bring quick-dry clothes and insect repellent; boat engines may be noisy but trips are more likely to run than in peak wet months.

Sulawesi & the Maluku Islands

April brings a clearer spell for many eastern parts of Sulawesi and into the Malukus, with windows of sun that make coastal towns pleasant and more reliable for boat travel. Dive visibility starts to improve for operators in the north around Bunaken, and inland trekking in Toraja is easier. Expect local transport to feel more dependable and bring a light waterproof for the occasional tropical shower.

Nusa Tenggara & Komodo (Lombok, Sumbawa, Flores, Sumba, Komodo National Park)

April is when the dry season starts to solidify across much of Nusa Tenggara - Labuan Bajo and Komodo begin to see calmer seas and clearer skies, making boat trips more reliable. Trekking routes on Flores, including to Kelimutu, dry out and are pleasant for multi-day hikes. This is a smart shoulder month for avoiding peak-season prices while enjoying improving conditions and better dive visibility.

Papua (Western New Guinea: Highlands and Coastal Papua, Raja Ampat area)

April can bring incremental drying in parts of Papua, especially in some coastal pockets, making boat transfers easier and opening windows for dive trips; Raja Ampat may see calmer spells. Highland trails start to firm up in places, improving access to the Baliem Valley. Still, the island’s climate is highly variable so carry rain protection and expect flight and boat schedules to remain somewhat changeable.
