How to Get to Ilam Municipality
Ilam (Ilam Municipality) is a hill district in eastern Nepal best reached by flying into Bhadrapur or Biratnagar, then taking road transport. Mountain roads can be slow and variable, so expect longer transfer times than straight-line distances suggest.
Bhadrapur Airport (BDP): Bhadrapur is the closest airport for eastern Nepal hill towns and has scheduled flights from Kathmandu; from Bhadrapur you can get a jeep or bus to Ilam. Road transfer takes about 3-5 hours depending on road conditions; shared jeeps/buses typically cost NPR 500-1,500.
Biratnagar Airport (BIR): Biratnagar is a larger regional airport with more frequent connections; road travel from Biratnagar to Ilam takes roughly 4-6 hours by bus or private vehicle, with fares for buses in the NPR 400-1,200 range.
Bus: Regular local and intercity bus services connect Ilam to Bhadrapur, Biratnagar and other towns in Province 1. Shared minibuses and local buses are the norm - expect travel times of 3-6 hours depending on origin and mountain road conditions; fares generally NPR 300-1,500.
Train: Nepal has no passenger rail serving Ilam; the closest rail infrastructure projects are limited and not relevant for travel to Ilam. Overland travel is by road only.
