Hat Ton Sai
Beach Small beach near Railay, renowned for rock climbing
Ton Sai Bay on Ko Phi Phi, the island’s main harbor with frequent ferries, dive shops, boat charters and an active evening scene.
Hat Ton Sai is the beach area known in English as Tonsai Beach on the Railay peninsula in Krabi province, southern Thailand. The beach occupies the narrow strip between Railay East and Railay West and is noted for its informal, backpacker-oriented atmosphere and climbing facilities.
Tonsai functions as a hub for rock climbers and independent travelers, with basic bungalows, climbing outfitters, and a compact network of trails and beachside bars. The area can be crowded in high season and offers direct access to climbing sectors on the adjacent limestone cliffs.
Historically a small fishing and farming locality, Tonsai’s character changed as climbers and budget travelers arrived from the 1980s onward; accommodation and services adapted to that visitor profile. The beach continues to be car-free and accessible only by boat.
Hat Ton Sai is located on the southern flank of the Railay peninsula and is reached by longtail boat from Ao Nang and nearby piers; it sits within the same karst landscape that defines Railay and Phra Nang beaches.
- Climbing and access: Connected to Railay West by a short walking path and steps, the beach is a base for the area's climbing community and budget accommodation options.
How to Get to Hat Ton Sai #
Hat Ton Sai (Tonsai Beach) is adjacent to Railay on the Krabi coast and likewise has no road access. Take a long-tail boat from Ao Nang Beach (about 10-20 minutes depending on tides and boat type) - boats land on the beach and it’s a short walk between Tonsai and the Railay beaches. There are no scheduled road buses to Tonsai; access is by water only.
Tips for Visiting Hat Ton Sai #
- Visit mid-morning on weekdays to catch the climbing community in action while avoiding peak tourist arrival times; Tonsai can be very busy on weekends.
- Land at the small Tonsai pier or walk the path from Railay - arriving on foot lets you bypass some boat drop-off congestion and find quieter spots.
- Explore the small coves and climbing boulders away from the central beach; many visitors stick to the main sand and miss tide pools and climbing routes just around the headlands.
