Dusty harmattan mornings still hang over Conakry in January, bringing dry air and cooler nights compared with the humid coast. Daytime temperatures sit in the high 20s-low 30s°C (mid-80s°F) but humidity is much lower than in the rainy months, so city sightseeing and ferry rides to Îles de Los are comfortable. Be ready for dusty streets early in the day and pack a lightweight scarf for windblown grit; roads are generally passable and hotels busy with regional travel rather than international tourists.

Fouta Djallon Highlands (Labé, Dalaba, Mamou)

January mornings in Labé and Dalaba are crisp and noticeably cooler than the coast - nights often fall into the mid-teens°C (low 60s°F) at higher elevations. Days are sunny and ideal for exploring plateaus, hilltop markets and waterfalls; the dry trails make trekking and canyon visits pleasant. Pack a light fleece for early mornings and evenings and sturdy shoes for dusty tracks.

Guinée Forestière (Southeast - Nzérékoré, Monts Nimba)

January in the southeast around Nzérékoré and the Monts Nimba is dry, pleasantly warm and a good time for jungle treks because the trails are firm and mosquitoes are reduced. Early mornings are cooler under the forest canopy, ideal for birdwatching and visiting farmed villages without the deluge of the wet months. January mornings in Kankan and the inland savanna are dry and cool compared with the coastal humidity, with temperatures often pleasant for early walks around town. The harmattan may bring a light dust haze and noticeably lower humidity - a good window for visiting markets and archaeological sites without the bugs of the wet months. Daytime temperatures are warm but bearable; bring sun protection and a hat for midday heat.
