Golden Triangle
Historical Site River confluence region bordering Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar
Where the Ruak meets the Mekong in northern Thailand, the Golden Triangle attracts visitors for riverside viewpoints, boat trips to Laos, the Hall of Opium museum in Chiang Saen, and the area’s complex history of opium trade.
The Golden Triangle is the geographic region in the upper Mekong River basin where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar come together at the confluence of the Ruak and Mekong rivers. The area is internationally known for its historical association with opium production and cross-border trade.
Key attractions include riverside viewpoints that overlook the triangular meeting point of the two rivers, boat trips on the Mekong, and local museums and interpretation centres that outline the regions opium history and development. The landscape is a mix of riverine plains and low hills with small towns and agricultural land on all three sides.
During the 19th and 20th centuries the Golden Triangle was a major centre of opium cultivation and trade; over recent decades governments and international programmes have reduced opium production and promoted alternative livelihoods and tourism.
The tri-border area sits in northern Thailand near Chiang Rai province, with the Thai riverside village of Sop Ruak commonly used as the visitor gateway to the Golden Triangle and boat access to the Mekong confluence.
- Viewing tip: The best viewing point for the confluence is the Sop Ruak riverside on the Thai side; boat trips along the Mekong give a clear view of the three-country meeting point.
What to See #
- Sop Ruak: Small riverside village on the Thai bank from which most viewpoints and boat tours of the confluence depart; local markets and restaurants are concentrated here.
- Hall of Opium: Modern interpretation centre near Sop Ruak that explains the regions opium history and the transition to contemporary livelihoods; located close to the riverside viewpoints.
