Coastal Belt - Greater Accra & Central Coast (Accra, Tema, Cape Coast)

The second rainy pulse usually strengthens in September, bringing afternoon and evening downpours and a renewed greenness to the mangroves and coastal forest patches. Cape Coast and nearby beaches are quieter than in winter but waterfalls and streams in nearby reserves are fuller and dramatic; however, expect slippery canopy walkways and muddy trails in Kakum. Travelers should carry a compact umbrella and plan inland excursions for mornings when showers are less likely.

Central Forest & Ashanti Plateau (Kumasi, Kakum, Lake Bosomtwe)

September brings the secondary rainfall peak; expect afternoon thunderstorms and saturated trails, but also swollen rivers and spectacular cascading waters. Local festivals tied to harvest cycles may continue, and markets brim with fresh produce, yet overland travel is still prone to delays. If you prefer dramatic river scenery and fewer international tourists, this month has much to offer but plan for wet conditions.

Volta Region & Eastern Highlands (Ho, Wli Falls, Kwahu Plateau, Lake Volta fringe)

September tends to bring the secondary or sustaining rains with powerful afternoon storms that swell streams and make river crossings more hazardous. Wli Falls and smaller cascades near Ho are at full flow and spectacular to visit, though access tracks may be slick. If you’re travelling by boat on the lake or to island communities, allow more time for schedules as winds and rain can delay departures.

Northern Savannah - Northern Region & Tamale (Tamale, Mole National Park, Bolgatanga approach)

September is the tail end of the rainy season; showers become less regular and the savannah begins a gradual browning. Roads improve after early drying and Mole’s animals start to concentrate again as some water sources reduce, improving visibility of wildlife late in the month. This month balances lower crowds and improving safari conditions-ideal if you can time a visit for the last weeks before the dry season.

Upper East & Upper West - Far North (Bolgatanga, Wa, Bawku areas)

September’s showers generally diminish toward the end of the month, and roads start to firm up again-harvesting preparations begin in many villages. The weather becomes more predictable, making it a practical time for extended overland trips and for visiting traditional festivals. Carry both sun and rain protection as conditions can flip between bright sun and sudden downpours in short order.
