Coastal Belt - Greater Accra & Central Coast (Accra, Tema, Cape Coast)
April is the beginning of the major southern rainy season so expect frequent heavy showers and thunderstorms, especially inland from the shore and late afternoons. Kakum and the Cape Coast hinterland become very green and waterfalls above the coast revive, but roads in low-lying Accra neighborhoods can flood and taxis slow down-carry waterproof footwear and allow extra travel time. Beach-going is still possible between rains; many cultural events continue but outdoor plans should have a wet-weather alternative.
Central Forest & Ashanti Plateau (Kumasi, Kakum, Lake Bosomtwe)
April marks the start of the major southern rainy season in this central belt with regular heavy showers, especially in the afternoons, and dramatic thunder. Kakum’s canopy walkway becomes slick and trunks are slippery, so waterproof footwear and insect repellent are essential. Travel is possible but slower; the silver lining is newborn vegetation, vibrant cocoa bloom in plantations, and many waterfalls are at their most impressive.
Volta Region & Eastern Highlands (Ho, Wli Falls, Kwahu Plateau, Lake Volta fringe)
April ushers in the start of the primary wet season across much of the Volta and highlands with regular afternoon downpours and lush vegetation returning to the hills. The Kwahu Easter paragliding festival usually peaks this month; weather can be changeable-early mornings are often flyable but cloud build-up can ground paragliders by midday. Trails around Wli and the Akwapim-Togo range become slippery, so wear good grips and expect fuller cascades.
Northern Savannah - Northern Region & Tamale (Tamale, Mole National Park, Bolgatanga approach)
April is the transition into the rainy season as the first strong showers arrive late in the month, bringing dramatic relief from the long dry spell and prompting a greening of the scrub. Wildlife becomes more dispersed away from permanent water sources, making some game sightings less predictable but birdlife increases. Roads that were dusty become tacky and then muddy after the first big storms; pack for variable conditions and expect fewer tourists.
Upper East & Upper West - Far North (Bolgatanga, Wa, Bawku areas)
April is transitional: the first thunderheads begin to appear late in the month, offering relief from the heat and the first green shoots on previously parched fields. Showers are sporadic but often dramatic, turning the soil and briefly cooling the air-farmers in these regions watch the sky closely. Pack both sun-protection and a lightweight rain layer; malaria risk begins increasing as puddles form.
