Coastal Belt - Greater Accra & Central Coast (Accra, Tema, Cape Coast)

Sea breezes keep daytime heat bearable on the coast even in the dry months; January mornings can be hazy from Harmattan dust blown in from the Sahara, but afternoons are bright and warm around 26-31°C. Accra is at its sunniest and driest from November through March so this period is best for beaches, open-air dining and the Jamestown Light Festival; however, visibility can be poor on dusty mornings and sunglasses and a light scarf are useful. Mosquito risk remains year-round, especially after any unexpected rains.

Central Forest & Ashanti Plateau (Kumasi, Kakum, Lake Bosomtwe)

Mornings in January are pleasantly cool around Kumasi compared with the coast, with lower humidity after the Harmattan clears-ideal for market exploration and visiting Kejetia Market before the heat builds. Daytime highs sit in the mid-to-high 20s Celsius; flora in Kakum and the surrounding forest reserves are dryer than in the rainy months, which reduces mosquitoes and makes canopy walks safer. This is an excellent month for culture, cocoa-farm visits and climbing moderate forest trails with minimal rain interruptions.

Volta Region & Eastern Highlands (Ho, Wli Falls, Kwahu Plateau, Lake Volta fringe)

Coastal breezes mix with a slightly cooler, hillier feel on the Kwahu Plateau in January; mornings are often clear and pleasant for paragliding from Kwahu during the Easter practice months, though principal events are later. Around Ho and the Volta lowlands the air is dry and comfortable after Harmattan dust clears, making this a good time to visit Wli Falls and do village walks. Bring a light layer for evenings on higher ground and sunscreen for sunny afternoons.

Northern Savannah - Northern Region & Tamale (Tamale, Mole National Park, Bolgatanga approach)

Clear, dry mornings in January make Mole National Park and the northern savannah a favorite for wildlife viewing; daytime heat is present but the lower humidity and cool nights (around 20°C) make safaris comfortable. Visibility is usually excellent after Harmattan dust reduces during daytime, so photographic light is good in the early hours and late afternoons. Hotels and lodges are busy with international safari guests; bring sun protection and a light sweater for cool nights.

Upper East & Upper West - Far North (Bolgatanga, Wa, Bawku areas)

January mornings in the far north are cool and dry with very clear skies-excellent conditions for cultural visits in Bolgatanga and for exploring traditional markets. Daytime heat is present but more bearable than the pre-rain months, and birdwatching in seasonal wetlands is productive. Roads are generally firm and travel is straightforward; nights can drop to cool temperatures so a light jacket is useful.
