Coastal Belt - Greater Accra & Central Coast (Accra, Tema, Cape Coast)

May brings the peak of the major rainy season with lush landscapes and regular downpours; daytime temperatures stay warm around the high 20s but humidity is high. Accra experiences some of the year’s worst urban flooding during intense storms, which can disrupt travel and intercity buses heading west to Cape Coast. On the upside, fewer tourists mean quieter beaches and lower accommodation rates, but expect muddy tracks if you plan to explore nearby cocoa farms or forest trails.

Central Forest & Ashanti Plateau (Kumasi, Kakum, Lake Bosomtwe)

May is the wettest stretch for the forested interior: persistent daytime downpours alternate with warm, humid spells and roads to smaller villages can become deeply rutted. Wildlife is harder to spot in reserves because animals spread out with abundant water, and some rural guesthouses are intermittently cut off after heavy storms. Pack a waterproof bag for camera gear and expect pleasant solitude in towns like Mampong and surrounding highlands.

Volta Region & Eastern Highlands (Ho, Wli Falls, Kwahu Plateau, Lake Volta fringe)

May features frequent heavy showers across the region and swollen waterfalls-Wli looks most dramatic-while lower valleys experience humid, rainy spells. Boat services on Lake Volta can be affected by wind and squalls, and some smaller rural roads to waterfalls and viewpoints become muddy and slow. The payoff is spectacular green hills and fewer tourists, but if you plan extensive hiking, block out extra days for weather delays.

Northern Savannah - Northern Region & Tamale (Tamale, Mole National Park, Bolgatanga approach)

May marks the start of the single rainy season with more frequent afternoon and evening storms; daytime temperatures are lower than March but humidity rises noticeably. Mole’s tracks become more challenging and some remote camps may be harder to reach, though waterfalls and seasonal pools appear across the landscape. Mosquito activity increases with the rains-bring repellents and consider malaria precautions during stays near vegetation and water.

Upper East & Upper West - Far North (Bolgatanga, Wa, Bawku areas)

May ushers in the single rainy season for the far north, bringing more regular afternoon storms that transform the scenery quickly from brown to verdant. Rivers and seasonal pools fill, and rice-growing areas swell; public transport may slow on dirt roads after heavy downpours. For travelers this is a lively time to see agricultural life, but expect rougher travel conditions and bring waterproof footwear.
