How to Get to Gahini#

Gahini (Eastern Province) is best accessed from Kigali International Airport (KGL) by road. There is no passenger rail service; intercity buses to eastern hubs plus a local taxi/moto for the last stretch are the usual lower-cost option.

By Air

Kigali International Airport (KGL): The main international airport for Rwanda. From KGL to Gahini in Eastern Province the drive is typically 1.5-2 hours depending on route; metred taxis and private transfers are available-expect roughly RWF 20,000-45,000 (approx. USD 20-45) for a private transfer, rental cars are also an option.

Other airports: There are no regular international airports closer than Kigali for public arrivals to Gahini; domestic charter flights are rare and not a practical option for most visitors.

By Train & Bus

Train: Rwanda does not have active passenger rail services connecting Kigali to the eastern provinces.

Bus: Intercity buses and minibuses (coasters) depart from Kigali’s main bus parks (e.g., Nyabugogo) toward Rwamagana, Kayonza and other Eastern Province hubs; typical bus fares to towns in the east are modest (a few hundred to a few thousand RWF). From a main hub you will usually take a motorcycle taxi (moto) or local car taxi for the final few kilometres to Gahini; total travel time commonly 2-3 hours depending on connections.

How to Get Around Gahini#

From Kigali (KGL) the fastest option is a private taxi/transfer; the cheapest is bus + local moto/taxi. Expect around 1.5-2 hours driving time; plan connections from Nyabugogo bus park if using public transport.

  • Private Transfer / Taxi (RWF 20,000-45,000) - Private taxis or pre-booked transfers from KGL offer the most direct door-to-door service to Gahini, with typical journey times of about 1.5-2 hours depending on traffic and exact location. Prices vary but RWF 20,000-45,000 (roughly USD 20-45) is a common range for a private car; agree the fare before departure or use a reputable transfer company.
  • Intercity Bus / Minibus (RWF 500-3,000) - Buses and minibuses run from Kigali’s Nyabugogo bus park to towns in the Eastern Province (Rwamagana, Kayonza). These are the cheapest option but schedules and comfort vary; travel plus final local connections often make the trip 2-3 hours. Bring small change and expect to transfer to a moto or taxi for the final kilometres into Gahini.
  • Motorcycle Taxi (Moto) (RWF 200-2,000) - Motorcycle taxis are common for short final-leg journeys in rural Rwanda; they are quick on narrow or rough roads and widely available at bus hubs. Negotiate or confirm the fare before riding. Helmets may not always be provided-insist on one if available.
  • Rental Car (USD 40-80/day) - Hiring a car gives you flexibility to explore the Eastern Province at your own pace and is useful if visiting multiple rural sites. Roads are generally paved between major towns but can be rough in places; choose a vehicle appropriate for rainy-season conditions. Fuel and insurance add to daily cost.
  • Local Bus / Shared Taxi (RWF 200-2,000) - Within the Eastern Province, shared taxis and small buses connect villages and health centres; these are cheap but run irregularly. Expect to wait for departures and to change vehicles for some routes-useful for budget travellers comfortable with flexible schedules.
  • Walking - Many parts of Gahini and its immediate neighbourhood are small and walkable; however, distances between villages and services can be significant, so walking is best for short local trips. Rural footpaths may be uneven.
