The Fortifications of Kotor are the medieval walls, towers and defensive structures that surround the Old Town of Kotor and climb the steep hillside to a mountain fortress. They form a continuous defensive system integrating the town with the slope above it.

The most visited element is the circuit of walls and the steep ascent to the hilltop fortress, which provides panoramic views over the Bay of Kotor and the town below. The Old Town within the walls contains a compact medieval street pattern with churches and historic buildings.

Construction and reinforcement of the fortifications took place over centuries, with significant work during the medieval and Venetian periods to strengthen the town’s defenses. The ensemble reflects the town’s strategic maritime and trading importance.

Kotor and its fortifications sit at the head of the Bay of Kotor on Montenegro’s Adriatic coast, with the walls rising directly from the town into the surrounding karst hinterland.

• Old Town: Kotor’s medieval Old Town with narrow streets, churches and squares that form the UNESCO-listed historic core.

The Fortifications of Kotor are above Kotor Old Town and are reached on foot from the town. Drive or take a bus along the Adriatic coastal road into Kotor (the E65/E80 coastal route); park or alight at Kotor’s bus station and walk the short distance (a few hundred metres) to the Old Town entrance.

From the Old Town you follow the marked stone stairway and fortified trail up the hillside to the Castle of San Giovanni and the higher fortifications - the climb is steep with many steps and typically takes 30-60 minutes round trip depending on pace.

• Start the hike up the fortifications early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the mid‑day heat and the influx of cruise‑ship day‑trippers that arrive in Kotor's port.
• Buy your admission at the main gate near the Old Town before beginning the climb - the trail is the same regardless of direction and ticketing is enforced at the entrance; allow about 1-2 hours round‑trip depending on stops.
• Pause at the several smaller lookout points and chapels along the route - many visitors rush to the top but miss striking panoramic views of the Bay of Kotor from intermediate terraces and ruined bastions.
