Western Viti Levu, Mamanucas & Yasawas (Nadi/Denarau/Resort Islands)

May ushers in the drier, cooler season; days feel sunnier and humidity drops, making beach days much more comfortable. Water clarity for snorkeling around the Mamanucas improves markedly and ferries run more reliably-this is the start of peak visiting season for divers and sunseekers. Light layers for breezy evenings and reef shoes for low-tide hopping between small islands are sensible additions to your bag.

Coral Coast & Suva (Sigatoka to Suva)

May is a comfortable month on the Coral Coast: mornings are warm with lower humidity and fewer heavy afternoon storms. Suva’s cafes become pleasant places for strolling and coastal drives are easier after the rains subside. This is a good time for combining city visits with beach stays-pack light rainwear for the odd shower and a sweater for cooler evenings inland.

Vanua Levu & Northern Islands (Savusavu, Labasa, Naqelelevu)

May is one of the driest months of the year for many parts of Vanua Levu-air quality improves and outdoor activities such as fishing charters and hiking are more reliable. Savusavu blooms with activity from visiting yachts and divers taking advantage of clearer seas. Pack light breathable clothing but include a sweater for cooler mornings in upland areas.

Taveuni & Lau Islands (Eastern Isles and the ‘Garden Island’)

May brings noticeably drier spells and comfortable humidity, making Taveuni’s trails and gardens pleasant for walking; the tangle of orchids and native plants is at its best after the wet season. Diving visibility typically improves and the Rainbow Reef is frequently visited by experienced operators. Pack a lightweight waterproof just in case, and plan extra travel time to/from the Lau islands where services are limited.

Highlands & Interior Viti Levu (Mount Tomanivi, Colo-i-Suva, central plateau)

May is pleasant in the highlands-lower humidity and cool mornings make for comfortable day treks, and the forest feels fresh after the wet season. Birdwatching is excellent as insects settle down and undergrowth is less dense. Bring a warm mid-layer for dawn starts and a rain jacket for occasional showers in the afternoons.
