Western Viti Levu, Mamanucas & Yasawas (Nadi/Denarau/Resort Islands)
Mornings often feel thick and still through March, though rainfall typically eases a little compared with January-February. Boat services begin to stabilise but storm systems can still cause rough passage to the Yasawas; onshore winds bring more cloud to Denarau and the west islands. It’s a quieter time at resorts and on beaches-ideal if you don’t mind humid air and packing waterproof gear-but check sea conditions before booking island-hopping.
Coral Coast & Suva (Sigatoka to Suva)
March keeps the tropical dampness but rainfall typically eases somewhat compared with the first two months; when the sun breaks through the beaches along the Coral Coast regain their appeal. Surf near Pacific Harbour and river rafting operators may still be operating at higher flows-good for adrenaline activities but riskier for first-time rafters. Resorts sometimes offer reduced rates in the shoulder as travellers avoid cyclone uncertainty.
Vanua Levu & Northern Islands (Savusavu, Labasa, Naqelelevu)
Persistent rain tends to ease in March compared with February, though heavy downpours are still common and humidity is high. Savusavu often sees drizzle and mist that makes mornings cool and damp; the town’s laid-back atmosphere suits travellers willing to move at a slower pace. Bring waterproof hiking boots for bush trails that become muddy and slick.
Taveuni & Lau Islands (Eastern Isles and the ‘Garden Island’)
March still brings generous rainfall, though the frequency can start to fluctuate with occasional sunny spells; the island remains intensely lush. Diving conditions can be changed by runoff but the marine life at the Rainbow Reef is resilient-expect strong currents at times. Remoteness of the Lau group means supplies and transport are easily affected; allow several spare days when travelling out this way.
Highlands & Interior Viti Levu (Mount Tomanivi, Colo-i-Suva, central plateau)
March sees some easing of the most intense downpours but the interior remains humid and prone to sudden rain; waterfalls are at their fullest and look spectacular. Cooler temperatures at elevation reward early starts but be prepared for wet-weather gear and stout boots. Road conditions crossing the interior can be slow after heavy falls-allow extra time between coastal towns.
