Western Viti Levu, Mamanucas & Yasawas (Nadi/Denarau/Resort Islands)
December has heat, humidity and the first real signs of cyclone season-sudden storms and heavy downpours are possible and seas can become choppy at short notice. Resorts remain open but travel plans around island transfers are more likely to be interrupted; holiday crowds swell over Christmas and New Year. Carry waterproofs, mosquito repellent and expect to rearrange boat trips if a tropical system is active.
Coral Coast & Suva (Sigatoka to Suva)
December ramps up heat and humidity toward the cyclone season; violent tropical downpours can occur and parades or outdoor activities in Suva will switch indoors if a storm is nearby. Expect holiday crowds around resort clusters and limited availability over Christmas/New Year. Bring a lightweight rain jacket and be ready to shift plans if authorities issue cyclone advisories.
Vanua Levu & Northern Islands (Savusavu, Labasa, Naqelelevu)
December reintroduces hot, humid conditions and an increased risk of tropical storms that can disrupt ferry services and outdoor plans. Savusavu remains attractive for boaters and divers willing to accept weather risk, but visitors should have flexible bookings and comprehensive travel insurance. Mosquito protection and waterproof containers for documents are essential.
Taveuni & Lau Islands (Eastern Isles and the ‘Garden Island’)
December returns to hot, humid conditions with frequent heavy showers and an increased chance of tropical systems. Taveuni is spectacularly green but travel plans-seaplane, ferry and inter-island boats-are more likely to be altered. Travellers should carry waterproofs, mosquito repellent and contingency days for weather-related delays when visiting the Lau chain.
Highlands & Interior Viti Levu (Mount Tomanivi, Colo-i-Suva, central plateau)
December increases the risk of torrential downpours and storms in the highlands; summit winds and rain make exposed ridges unpleasant and potentially dangerous. Lodges in upland areas may operate with reduced supplies if access is cut by floods. Always register hikes with local guides during this season and be prepared to change plans if weather warnings are issued.
