High / low are average daily temperatures (°C). “Feels” reflects how hot or cold it feels, allowing for humidity.
Bioko Island (Malabo, Luba, Pico Basilé)
May is usually one of the wettest months and Pico Basilé lives up to its cloud-forest reputation - summit attempts are chilly, saturated and often fog-bound. Strong, localized squalls make sea crossings bumpy, so islands-hopping plans can be fragile. On the upside, the island’s waterfalls are at their fullest and the lowland forests buzz with breeding birds and mammals; a waterproof pack and flexible itinerary make all the difference.
Mainland Coast & Bata (Bata, Mbini, Kogo)
May often brings heavy, sustained rainfall; the coastal strip becomes profoundly green and rivers run high. Infrastructure is affected: smaller villages sometimes experience temporary isolation from flooded tracks, and rainfall can produce urban puddles in Bata that make walking cumbersome. Nonetheless, this is a strong month for wildlife sightings in coastal mangroves where migratory shorebirds and resident species concentrate.
Interior Rainforest & Highlands (Monte Alén, Nsok, Ebebiyin area)
June continues with persistent showers and warm, muggy daytime temperatures; the canopy traps moisture so the interior rarely feels cool despite cloud cover. River levels are high, making boat segments of jungle trips faster but sometimes more dangerous - local operators will cancel when currents are too strong. Remote lodges may run reduced services if supply lines are affected by washouts.
Annobón Island
May is usually a month of regular heavy rain and sticky humidity; the island’s low elevation prevents cooling breezes from doing much to alleviate the feeling. For divers, visibility off the reefs may be reduced by runoff and choppy seas, though the underwater life remains rich for those patient enough to wait for a calm spell. Expect few tourists; solitude is part of the appeal, but so is self-reliance.
Corisco & Small Coastal Islands (Corisco, Elobey Grande/Chico)
May is often very wet and winds pick up at times, which makes kayaking or shallow-water exploration on Corisco less comfortable. Island trails and paths can become muddy and overgrown, so sturdy footwear is important. Local communities may limit guest numbers when supplies arrive less often, so confirm bedding and food availability before you travel.
