Bioko Island (Malabo, Luba, Pico Basilé)

August is similar to July but there can be short windows of sharper blue sky after storms that make birdwatching on Bioko spectacular - the island’s endemic species are easier to hear than see in heavy foliage. Road travel remains slow outside Malabo: expect detours and frequent stops for slipped slopes or fallen trees. Bring waterproof footwear and plan fewer long overland transfers.

Mainland Coast & Bata (Bata, Mbini, Kogo)

August resembles July with persistent warm, wet weather that can make inland excursions into forested reserves challenging. The region’s waterfalls and river rapids are at good flow, which benefits river trips but also increases current hazards; local operators will advise when conditions are safe. Expect fewer fellow tourists and therefore quieter beaches, but accept that days frequently split between sunny spells and heavy rains.

Interior Rainforest & Highlands (Monte Alén, Nsok, Ebebiyin area)

September is often one of the most intense months for rainfall and the interior can feel like a different world: rivers surge, and paths can be turned into narrow streams. Monte Alén’s waterfalls reach their fullest, spectacular for those who can access them, but access is frequently limited to rugged 4x4. Bring durable rubber boots, a waterproof pack cover, and a flexible schedule.

Annobón Island

August resembles July with frequent intense showers and warm, humid days; the tropical vegetation is reflective of the almost constant moisture regime. Marine access depends heavily on sea state, so diving or fishing trips are arranged with caution. Pack protective gear for electronics and clothes, and expect that off-grid accommodation may lack full conveniences during stormy stretches.

Corisco & Small Coastal Islands (Corisco, Elobey Grande/Chico)

August resembles July with ongoing showers and variable seas; calm mornings sometimes allow excellent visibility for reef exploration but afternoons often reverse to breezy, rainy conditions. Plan anchors and pickups with an eye to tide times and weather forecasts; local captains are the best judges of safe passage. Bring waterproof cases for electronics and accept that island stays are low-frills and weather-dependent.
