Mongolia & Inner Mongolia (northern China)
A sudden turn toward cold often arrives in October: clear sunny days can still be comfortable, but nights drop fast and the first light snows may dust higher terrain. Travelers should expect shorter service seasons for many camps and some mountain roads beginning to close; warm sleeping gear becomes essential for overnight trips. This is a good month for cultural visits and avoiding high summer crowds, but check transport connections carefully.
Northeast China & Manchuria (Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning including Harbin and Dalian)
Crisp mornings in October bring noticeable cooling and the first snow flurries at higher elevations; city festivals and harvest fairs become common in smaller towns. This is a popular month for local weekend trips, and rail travel fills up during the holiday periods, so buy tickets early. Nights grow cold quickly-bring warm layers and a windproof coat for seaside walks.
North & Central China Plain (Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shaanxi corridor including Xi’an)
October brings crisp, clear weather and vivid autumn colour in the northern hills; Beijing and Xi’an are cool but pleasant, and the National Day Golden Week at the start of the month can be intensely crowded in tourist hotspots. Rural National Park roads may see heavy local traffic-reserve car hire or rail tickets early. Nights are chilly so pack a warm jacket for evenings, but daytime sightseeing is excellent.
Tibetan Plateau & Southwest Highlands (Tibet, Sichuan highlands, Yunnan)
By November the highlands slide back toward winter: clear, very cold nights and brisk sunny days in exposed areas, while service levels decline in rural lodges and smaller treks close for the season. Road and rail links into Lhasa usually continue but with less frequency; plan conservative travel times and check local transport schedules. Pack insulated layers and expect strong UV despite the cold.
