Mongolia & Inner Mongolia (northern China)

May opens into a genuinely pleasant, short spring: temperatures climb to comfortable 15-25°C in the grasslands, wildflowers appear and ger camps prepare for the summer influx. This is a prime time for trekking, horse riding and attending Naadam rehearsal events in some areas ahead of the national festival season. Reserve accommodations in popular routes early, as domestic tourism picks up rapidly toward late May.

Northeast China & Manchuria (Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning including Harbin and Dalian)

May often offers pleasantly mild days - mid-teens to low twenties - and Chinese Labor Day and other holidays can boost domestic travel to coastal resorts and national parks. Tourist sites in Shenyang and coastal areas may get busy around holiday weekends, but inland forests and river valleys are at their greenest. Pack a mix of light layers and a rain jacket; camping and longer hikes become practical in many areas.

North & Central China Plain (Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shaanxi corridor including Xi’an)

May is often sunny and warm with morning mists lifting from the plains and the start of the agricultural planting season; Golden Week at the end of April/early May can create localized crowds in popular sites. Temperatures regularly push into the 20s-25°C, making sightseeing pleasant but increasingly sunny-bring sunscreen and hydrate. Rural drives are comfortable; look for lower hotel rates outside the national holidays.

Tibetan Plateau & Southwest Highlands (Tibet, Sichuan highlands, Yunnan)

May opens the best window for many highland treks: daytime temperatures in much of eastern Tibet and the Hengduan ranges are pleasant and snowlines retreat on passes. Pilgrim routes and local festivals increase activity around monasteries, while Yunnan’s highlands show dramatic floral displays. Because infrastructure is still recovering from the winter, book lodges ahead and plan conservative acclimatisation schedules.
