Mongolia & Inner Mongolia (northern China)
By early April, the steppe begins to show green and the notorious yellow dust events, carrying sand from the Gobi and deserts into Beijing, Tokyo and Seoul, become more frequent. This is a shoulder season for Mongolia: fewer tourists and cheaper camps, but dusty conditions can complicate photography and cause flight delays. Bring masks and goggles if you’re sensitive to dust, and choose flexible itineraries for excursions into the outer steppe.
Northeast China & Manchuria (Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning including Harbin and Dalian)
Cool, damp springs arrive in April with cherry trees in bloom around city parks and the first migratory birds returning to wetlands near the Amur. This is a good shoulder month for exploring Jilin’s rime-ice scenery as it transitions and for visiting Dalian’s seaside promenades on calm days. Bring a warm jacket for sea breezes and expect fewer crowds than in summer, but plan for occasional rain showers.
North & Central China Plain (Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shaanxi corridor including Xi’an)
By early April the countryside near Xi’an and Beijing shows green, and outdoor exploration becomes more comfortable; however, spring rains and the occasional cold snap still appear. This is a good time for cycling historic sections of the city walls near Xi’an and visiting the Forbidden City with fewer summer crowds. A windproof layer and an umbrella are prudent; check forecasts for episodic dust or rain.
Tibetan Plateau & Southwest Highlands (Tibet, Sichuan highlands, Yunnan)
April brings clear air on the plateau with warming days but nights still sharp; the lower Sichuan basin sees rhododendron and primula blooms in higher elevations. This is a shoulder season for trekking in parts of Yunnan and the eastern Tibetan fringes - routes are quieter but services start to resume. Altitude acclimatisation remains crucial; bring sunscreen and a hat for intense UV at altitude.
