Mongolia & Inner Mongolia (northern China)

The short summer - June into July - is bright and warm across Mongolia and Inner Mongolia; daytime highs often reach the low 20s to low 30s in the Gobi and steppe with cool nights. This is the best window for extended rides, multi-day treks and visiting remote lakes like Khovsgol; nomadic families are active and welcoming. Expect long daylight hours, some afternoon thunderstorms, and plan for sunscreen, insect repellent and layers for chilly evenings.

Northeast China & Manchuria (Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning including Harbin and Dalian)

Warmth and humidity increase in June with long daylight hours, while the first strong monsoonal influence arrives later in the month bringing heavier, short-lived storms to the region. This is the start of the lake and mountain hiking season; expect more insects and soggy trails after rain. Book accommodations early for popular national parks and coastal resorts during weekends.

North & Central China Plain (Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shaanxi corridor including Xi’an)

June sees the arrival of the East Asian monsoon across much of the central plain, bringing higher humidity and frequent heavy afternoon rain; Xi’an and Shaanxi hills can be lush but muddy. If you plan to hike around the Loess Plateau or the outskirts of Beijing, pick mornings for the clearest weather and be ready for sudden storms. Pack waterproof layers and quick-drying clothing for comfort.

Tibetan Plateau & Southwest Highlands (Tibet, Sichuan highlands, Yunnan)

June sees the onset of the summer monsoon in parts of the southwest, bringing increasing afternoon thunderstorms to Sichuan and parts of eastern Tibet while high plains remain relatively dry. Trail conditions can become wet and river crossings more hazardous, particularly in the Sichuan-Tibet border ranges. For peak trekking conditions aim for early summer before July’s heavier rains; insect repellent and waterproofs are essential.
