How to Get to Dandong
Dandong is served by a small regional airport, Dandong Langtou Airport (DDG), and by regular rail services to major Liaoning hubs at Dandong Railway Station (丹东站). Many international travellers arrive via Shenyang Taoxian International Airport (SHE) and continue to Dandong by intercity train or coach.
Dandong Langtou Airport (DDG): Dandong’s small regional airport handles domestic flights (to Beijing, Shanghai via connections, Dalian etc.). From the terminal into downtown Dandong you can take the airport shuttle bus (about 15 CNY, roughly 30-40 minutes depending on traffic) or a taxi (about 30-60 CNY, ~20-30 minutes).
Shenyang Taoxian International Airport (SHE): Shenyang is the nearest major international airport and a common entry point if you can’t fly directly to Dandong. To reach Dandong you typically transfer to Shenyang railway stations (Shenyang or Shenyang North) and take an intercity train to Dandong (see Train below) - allow 2-4 hours door-to-door depending on connection. Long-distance coach services between Shenyang and Dandong are also available; expect fares and journey times comparable to the rail options (see Bus below).
Train: The main rail gateway is Dandong Railway Station (丹东站). High-speed and conventional services connect Dandong with Shenyang and other Liaoning cities on the Shenyang-Dandong corridor; typical high-speed trips to Shenyang take around 1.5-2.5 hours with second-class fares commonly in the range of ~70-150 CNY depending on service. Trains to Dalian and farther destinations require changes at Shenyang or other hubs.
Bus: Long-distance coaches run from Dandong coach stations to nearby cities such as Shenyang and Dalian; journey times are generally 2.5-4 hours depending on route and traffic, with fares often in the ~60-130 CNY range. Within the city, local public buses are very cheap (usually 1-2 CNY) and cover most neighbourhoods, though routes can be busy at peak times.
How to Get Around Dandong
Dandong is easiest to navigate by a mix of intercity train for arrivals and taxis or local buses for getting around town. For short sightseeing trips the riverside and central neighbourhoods are highly walkable; use buses for the cheapest travel and taxis or Didi when you want speed or have luggage.
- Intercity train (~70-150 CNY) - Fast and reliable for regional travel - high-speed trains link Dandong with Shenyang and other Liaoning cities on the Shenyang-Dandong corridor. Trains depart from Dandong Railway Station (丹东站); book ahead during holidays. Good balance of speed, comfort and value for trips to provincial hubs.
- Long-distance coach (~60-130 CNY) - Coaches connect Dandong with Shenyang, Dalian and smaller regional towns; they depart from the main coach stations and are useful if train times don't suit. Buses can be slower than high-speed rail in bad traffic but are often slightly cheaper and have more departure times.
- City bus (1-2 CNY) - The local bus network is the cheapest way to get around Dandong and covers most districts and riverside attractions. Fares are typically low (about 1-2 CNY); buses can be crowded and signage may be mostly in Chinese, so have a map or ask your hotel for key route numbers.
- Taxi / Didi (8-30 CNY (typical short ride)) - Taxis are plentiful and convenient for short trips or when you have luggage; expect a modest flag fall and around 8-30 CNY for most inner-city rides. Didi (ride-hailing) also operates in Dandong and can be easier for language barriers and fixed prices, though surge pricing may apply at peak times.
- Bicycle / e-bike (~1-3 CNY per 30-60 min) - Shared bicycles and electric bikes are common for short hops along the riverfront and through neighbourhoods. They're cheap and flexible - watch for local parking rules and use apps to unlock bikes. Useful for sightseeing in fair weather but less comfortable on busy roads.
- Walking - Dandong's central riverside areas and the museum/bridge zones are compact and pleasant on foot; walking is often the fastest way to explore the Yalu River promenade and nearby markets. Bring sensible shoes and a map - some streets are best navigated by foot rather than by vehicle.
