Dandong Travel Guide

Dandong is a North Korea border town in Liaoning Province, northeast China. Although there is nothing remarkable about Dandong, it makes a good access point for those wanting to visit North Korea.

You can view North Korean territory from Yalujiang Park, from where the now defunct Broken Bridge (Yalu Jiang Duan Qiao) can also be seen. The next best thing is to take a boat ride up along the Sinuiju River separating the two countries, or you could even join a tour and visit Sinuiju by train from Dandong, and then onto Pyongyang.

The Cenotaph of the War to Resist US Aggression is worth a look, along with a large, hillside museum. The best attractions for Dandong are out of town, however. Tiger Mountain Great Wall (Hushan Great Wall) is 25kms from Dandong and is a restored section of the Ming dynasty Great Wall of China.

Dandong has oodles of Korean restaurants, particularly along the street near the river.

Getting There & Away

Dandong Airport is 20kms from town and receives flights from Guangzhou and Shanghai. The nearest major airport is in Shenyang, 250kms to the north. If in Beijing, the easiest way to Dandong is by bus in 4 hours, while night trains take 10 hours.
