Dallol is a hydrothermal area in the Danakil Depression of Ethiopia’s Afar Region, known for its striking salt formations, hot springs and vivid mineral deposits. It is an active geothermal landscape where salt, sulfur and iron minerals produce bright colours and sculpted surfaces.

The site is dominated by salt flats, hot springs, acidic pools and fumarolic activity that form ephemeral ponds and terraces. Photographers and scientists often visit to document the unusual mineralogy and geothermal features, though conditions are extreme and variable.

Geothermal upwelling and the evaporation of highly saline fluids create the terraces, chimneys and pools observed at the site; ongoing hydrothermal activity continually alters the surface formations.

Dallol sits within the Danakil Depression in northeastern Ethiopia, a tectonically and volcanically active lowland region of the Afar Triangle. The surrounding landscape is arid salt plain and volcanic terrain and the site is reached via long road journeys from regional towns.

  • Mineral colours: The site is notable for extremely acidic, colorful mineral deposits and ephemeral hydrothermal pools formed by rising hot, saline fluids rich in iron, sulfur and salts.
  • Access and safety: The area is remote, geothermally active and very hot; visits are typically undertaken by guided geological or scientific expeditions with appropriate safety precautions.

How to Get to Dallol (hydrothermal system) #

Access is by organized 4x4 convoys from the regional hub of Mekele or from Semera; most trips route through the town of Berhale and the Afar highlands. Permits and local guides are required-independent travel is strongly discouraged due to remoteness and security considerations.

Tips for Visiting Dallol (hydrothermal system) #

  • Travel only with a reputable, experienced tour operator-Dallol lies in a remote, politically sensitive region and conditions can be hazardous.
  • Bring high-SPF sunscreen, a good respirator mask for sulphur fumes, and plenty of water-surface temperatures and off-gassing can be extreme.
  • Plan logistics in advance: fuel, spare tires, and satellite communication are essential; emergency services are minimal or non-existent.
