How to Get to Erta Ale
Erta Ale is in remote northeastern Afar and is reached only with organised 4x4 expeditions. Typical access is over rough desert tracks from regional towns such as Semera or Logiya (or by longer overland drives from Mek’ele), arranged through tour operators; visits normally include multi‑day driving, desert camping and a guided hike (several hours) from the vehicle drop‑off to the crater rim.
Tips for Visiting Erta Ale
- Join an organized, experienced Afar tour operator and expect a multi‑day 4x4 transfer from Semera or Mek'ele - Erta Ale is remote and visits are normally overnight camping expeditions rather than day trips.
- Plan to approach the crater rim at night to see the lava lake glow; guides time the final short ascent for darkness so you get the best views of the molten lava without losing sightlines.
- Because of local security protocols and the Afar Region's requirements, travel with a company that arranges the necessary regional permits and police/military accompaniment when required.
